I don't have any more pictures, but it really does sound like you were off route :) The way I did is pretty much what is described in Adirondack Rock. From the belay you describe (alcove), I went up on the right wall onto the very spacious ledge, went around the corner, then kept going up on the S crack.

From the sound of it, it sounds like you might have been on the 5.7 Cave Finish variation (v5 in Adirondack Rock).

That descent ... I've gone up there twice (the other time was to do Empress) and I've never found the right trail ... The best I've done is with a single rope rap (when I did Empress). When I did Regular Route, I needed 1 double-rope rappel, followed by a single rope rappel, followed by a dicey lower off from a fixed rope.

That being said, I love that slab :)

do you have more pics of the start of pitch 5? did the route this past weekend and I think we got really off route from that big belay alcove/ledge right before the vertical stretch. we went left and up into a kinda sloping corner where the vertical part was slightly overhanging... had a really hard time, so wondering if we were on route or not.

also got totally stuck on descent, took the wrong gully and ended up rapping in the dark

Hi Kimball,

Thanks for the comments!

For this trip, TrailNH was pretty much the only source I used. I mostly wanted to be sure I wouldn’t be breaking trail for 20 miles. It turns out that it’s a great resource for this type of solo trip.

As you said, the furnace wasn’t stoked; I was so exhausted that simply ate a Clif bar and went to bed. I’ll remember that as being a big mistake.

The Mountain Hardwear bag I use, I like; but it’s BIG and heavey (you get what you pay for ). When I do decide to bite the bullet and setup a new sleeping system, I’ll definitely be looking into your type of setup.

Congratulation on your Pemi-Loop. I love it up there too.

-13F is cold but doable. Perhaps you needed more calories? Gotta stoke the furnace! Also some people are just cold sleepers IMO. Even if I'm comfortable for the first half of the night, I'm often cold by morning. On cold trips I use a double-bag system: a -10 EMS Expedition bag, with a +20 EMS bag inside it. (both down fill). Works well and gives me some flexibility on the temperature range.

Did you use TrailsNH.com to stay up-to-date on the trip conditions?
Nice Trip Report!

Sounds like a good trip! I can't even imagine hiking in weather that cold, although I'd like to try sometime. The coldest I've done is a 20-degree night in Zion, and it really wasn't that bad.

Thanks for the comment. You're right that I still have to work out my sleeping system. I've been hiking for just over 1 year, so the equipement I have is still a bit lacking.

Excellent post, I have hiked int he whites, but never this section, and not in winter. Looked like fun. I think you were cold in your bag for two reasons. The Big agnes Insulated Air core is only rated to 15ºF. And the Lamina -30 is a non EN rated bag. which means it probably isn't a -30 - still it's probably a -15º - but I think the two combined are why you were cold.

Again, great hike.

It was definitely a blast. I like to get to the top of those peaks, but not at any cost. As the old tired saying says, "It's in the journey ...". That was true on Saturday :)

That sounds like a lot of fun. At least you were out there enjoying the elements.
